Zola learns at school about empathy and kindness to others and I like that the teacher tells the children that not everyone is fortunate enough to have their basic needs met. What Zola did on Tuesday is a wonderful celebration of family, friendship and community. But sometimes the unexpected happens and events happen that not even the best plans could have foreseen. Knowing that her Nonna loves knitting, but isn’t too skilled at it, Zola would love for Nonna to meet Teta but can’t think of a way to get her family to meet the neighbours. The new neighbours next door are private people and Zola doesn’t know much about them except there are people named Bianca, Omar and someone called Teta who likes knitting. Zola’s trouble-free life is going well until her inquisitive nature gets the better of her. Zola is trying hard to be more responsible and to make the right choices and she and her Nonna are enjoying spending time together at the St. Thank you and for gifting me this story to read and review! Once again, the illustrations by Hudson stand out and perfectly complement that story that is being spun! To me, I feel like Marchetta is trying to open the minds of younger readers to see the world as it is, and not just the perfect version they are told. I think it is so important for children to know more about the world in an honest.
I particularly like the messages that Marchetta endeavours to intertwine within Zola’s everyday life.
She also learns from Miss Divis about those less fortunate than her, and what she can do to help.
Zola learns to welcome someone new – in this instance, it is Bianca, Omar and their teta. The power of friendship and kindness was at the fore within this tale. Whenever she and Alessandro play, something always goes wrong! I loved this Zola adventure even more than the first! I especially loved the seamless multicultural links evident within the story! This time, the story focused on Zola’s magnetism for trouble.
